SAN DIEGO, September 16, 2024 -- Algenesis Corporation is excited to announce that it has
received a $1.5 million award from the Department of Defense’s Distributed Bioindustrial
Manufacturing Program (DBIMP). This funding will support the planning and development of a
new domestic facility focused on producing diisocyanates, essential precursors for
polyurethanes.
The DBIMP, a key initiative under the White House’s Executive Order 14081 aimed at bolstering the U.S. bioeconomy, announced the latest 12 awards, which brings the total number of awards to 25 and the overall funding to $42 million. Algenesis is honored to be among the esteemed group of recipients, which includes Air Protein, Bluestem Biosciences, and Danimer Scientific.
Dr. Aprille Ericsson, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Science and Technology, emphasized
the significance of the program: “The bioindustrial manufacturing industry embodies the
American values of innovation and entrepreneurship that are essential to a flourishing domestic
industrial base. These awards not only support the commercial viability of bioproduction and biobased materials, but also empower this industry to contribute to national security as well as our economic prosperity.”
Algenesis Corporation’s planned facility will play a crucial role in establishing a reliable,
domestic supply of diisocyanates, thereby strengthening the U.S. bioindustrial manufacturing
sector and enhancing supply chain stability.
Stephen Mayfield, CEO of Algenesis Corporation, shared his enthusiasm: “We are thrilled to
receive this significant support from the Department of Defense. This award is a testament to
our commitment to advancing sustainable materials and will enable us to contribute to both
national security and industrial resilience. Our planned facility represents a key step towards
securing a domestic supply of critical components for polyurethanes.”
Dr. Ryan Simkovsky, CTO of Algenesis Corporation, added, “The funding from the DBIMP
allows us to accelerate the development of a state-of-the-art production facility. We are excited
about the opportunity to drive innovation in bioindustrial manufacturing and to support the
broader goals of the U.S. defense and bioeconomy sectors.”
Dr. Laura Taylor-Kale, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy, highlighted the
importance of these efforts: “Each DBIMP award demonstrates how the DoD is committed to harnessing the innovation and advanced capabilities coming from industry. Expanding domestic biomanufacturing capacity brings stability to supply chains and furthers our efforts to build a modernized defense industrial ecosystem.”
Algenesis is eager to move forward with this groundbreaking project and will provide updates as
it progresses.
