San Diego, Ca. — October 21, 2024 — Algenesis is thrilled to announce the publication of a new scientific paper titled "Mechanically Robust and Biodegradable Electrospun Membranes Made from Bioderived Thermoplastic Polyurethane and Polylactic Acid." This research showcases our innovative aliphatic TPU-FC2 (1195A) as a promising candidate for biobased and biodegradable electrospun non-woven fabrics, with applications in critical areas such as medical gowns and K95 masks.
The study, led by primary author Bob Chambers from the Material Science & Engineering Department at UC San Diego, highlights the suitability of Algenesis’ TPU-FC2 (1195A) for producing non-woven fabrics, both on its own and when blended with PLA (polylactic acid). Additionally, the research presents an aromatic TPU formulation developed by the team, which exhibited good properties, albeit with slower biodegradation.
“Our collaboration with Bob and the team at UCSD underscores our commitment to advancing sustainable materials,” said Ryan Simkovsky, Chief Technology Officer at Algenesis. “By providing the necessary materials, conducting physical property measurements, and performing biodegradation analysis, we are proud to contribute to this significant research effort and support the efforts of our academic collaborators to help make better products for the world.”
The findings of this research are not only a testament to our dedication to developing environmentally friendly materials but also highlight the potential impact of our products in the healthcare industry and beyond. As the demand for sustainable and effective materials continues to grow, Algenesis remains at the forefront of innovation.
The paper is now available for public access and can be found at ASC Publications.
